5 ways to stay active and healthy during the holiday season

The holiday season is a time of joy, celebrations, and indulgence. But with all the festivities, it's easy to put health and fitness on the back burner. Between holiday parties, family gatherings, and the hustle and bustle of the season, it can be challenging to stick to your usual wellness routines. However, staying active and healthy doesn’t have to be difficult. With a few mindful adjustments, you can enjoy the holidays while keeping your health in check.

Here are five ways to stay active and healthy during the holiday season:

1. Prioritize quick and effective workouts

During the holidays, your schedule can get hectic, making it hard to fit in long workout sessions. However, shorter, high-intensity workouts can be just as effective. Whether you’re at home, visiting family, or on vacation, there are plenty of quick workouts you can do with minimal equipment.

Try 20-30 minute high-intensity interval training (HIIT) sessions, bodyweight exercises like squats, lunges, and push-ups, or yoga routines to get your heart rate up and muscles working. These workouts can easily be squeezed into your busy schedule without taking up too much time.

Download a fitness app or follow online videos for guided sessions you can do at home or on the go.

2. Stay hydrated (even when you're busy)

With holiday parties and family dinners, it's easy to forget the basics, like drinking enough water. Dehydration can leave you feeling sluggish and more prone to overeating. Staying hydrated is essential for maintaining energy levels, supporting your immune system, and even helping to manage hunger. Heating can also increase the risk of dehydration.

Carry a reusable water bottle with you throughout the day as a reminder to sip regularly. Herbal teas are also a great way to stay hydrated while adding some variety during colder months.

If you need it, set reminders on your phone or use a hydration app to track your water intake, ensuring you stay on top of your hydration needs.

3. Balance indulgence with healthy choices

The holidays are often synonymous with rich foods, sweet treats, and festive drinks. While it's important to enjoy these special moments, balance is key to maintaining your health. You can still indulge in your favorite holiday foods while incorporating healthy choices to keep your body feeling good.

Focus on moderation rather than restriction. At holiday meals, fill your plate with vegetables and whole foods first, then enjoy smaller portions of indulgent dishes. When attending parties, bring a healthy dish to share, so you know there’s a nutritious option available.

For healthier dessert alternatives, try plant-based treats made with whole grains, nuts, and natural sweeteners like maple syrup or dates.

4. Stay active with festive activities

Physical activity doesn’t have to be limited to the gym. There are plenty of festive ways to stay active during the holiday season that can be fun for the whole family. Embrace the spirit of the holidays by incorporating movement into your celebrations.

Go for a brisk walk to admire holiday lights in your neighborhood, organize a family-friendly game of snowball tag, or try ice skating. Even decorating your home or running errands can count as physical activity if you keep moving.

If you’re traveling, explore new places on foot or rent a bike to stay active while sightseeing.

5. Practice mindfulness and stress management

The holiday season can be stressful, with the pressure to shop, cook, and attend multiple events. Chronic stress can take a toll on your physical health, leading to fatigue, overeating, or even illness. Taking time to practice mindfulness and stress-reducing techniques can help you stay calm and focused during the busiest times.

Incorporate stress-reducing activities into your daily routine, such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, or journaling. Even five minutes of mindful breathing can help center your thoughts and reduce holiday stress.

Before diving into holiday activities, take a moment each morning to set an intention for the day. This can help you stay grounded and approach your to-do list with a calm and positive mindset.

Staying active and healthy during the holiday season doesn’t have to be overwhelming. By incorporating short workouts, staying hydrated, balancing indulgences with healthy choices, staying active with festive activities, and practicing mindfulness, you can enjoy the holiday season while prioritizing your well-being. Remember, it’s all about balance, allow yourself to enjoy the celebrations while keeping your health a priority.
