New Year, New You: How to set health-focused resolutions

Happy New Year everyone!

It's a new year, a new start, a new opportunity for whatever goals you have.

The dawn of a new year often symbolizes a fresh start and a chance to set new goals. For many people dieting, moving more, getting slim and in shape is on the top of the list. But how long does the enthusiasm last? Making adopting a healthier lifestyle a top priority is more rewarding, and what better way to begin than by focusing on a balanced and nutritious diet? In this blog post we'll explore how you can incorporate healthy eating into your New Year's resolutions for a happier and healthier you.

Reflect on the past year

Before setting any new resolutions or goals, take a moment to reflect on the previous year. Count your achievements and celebrate them, acknowledge your challenges, and note what you've learned of them. Understanding your journey will provide valuable insights for setting realistic and achievable goals.

Set clear and realistic goals

Setting general goals like "eating healthier" or "moving more" can be challenging to achieve. What do you mean by that exactly? Be specific and realistic. For instance, set a goal to incorporate more fruits and vegetables into your daily meals or reduce your sugar intake. Clear objectives make it easier to track progress and stay motivated. If you have a specific weight or body type goal, it can lead you to diets. 5% of the people will stick to these resolutions. And still if you are within that 5% and reach your goal, what will happen after the diet ends? If you don't implement healthy habits in your lifestyle, your results won't be sustainable.

Gradual changes lead to lasting results

Rather than attempting drastic changes all at once, opt for gradual shifts in your eating habits. Start by incorporating one or two healthy meals or snacks into your daily routine. As you become accustomed to these changes, you will make more nutritious choices and leave the unhealthy habits behind. It will make your results last for longer.

Educate yourself about nutrition

Understanding the fundamentals of nutrition empowers you to make informed decisions about your eating. Learn about macronutrients, micronutrients, portion sizes, and how different foods impact your body, it is the foundation of a balanced and health-conscious diet. If you are not into this knowledge, then ask a nutritionist, health coach or a dietitian who can help you with food recommendations and teaches you how to establish healthy habits. Choose someone who has a holistic approach, and takes in consideration your life circumstances too.

Meal prep for success

Meal preparation can be a game-changer on your journey to healthy eating. Set aside time each week to plan and prepare meals for the week. Having nutritious options readily available reduces the likelihood of opting for unhealthy alternatives when you're pressed for time. Also less effort and less time consuming during a busy week, not to mention it can reduce your shopping expenses if you only buy items that are necessary for the weekly meals. For this part you can also use professional help to get personalized meal plans only with the foods included that you really like.

Mindful eating

Practice mindful eating by being present during your meals. Pay attention to the flavours, textures, and colours of your food, always check what you can add to your meals to make them more nutritious and colourful, and not what to take off the plate. Eating mindfully allows you to appreciate your meal, recognize when you're full, and prevent overeating or undereating and binging later.

Balance and variety in your diet

Strive for a balanced diet that includes a variety of foods from all food groups. Incorporate colourful fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Variety ensures you receive a broad spectrum of nutrients, and that they are absorbed properly. Combine all macronutrients in each meal, so they can compliment each other.

Seek support and accountability

Share your resolutions with a friend, family member, or a support group. Having someone to encourage and hold you accountable can make a significant difference in achieving your goals. Consider joining a health-focused community or online group for added support. You can also write a progress journal for yourself to check on your goals weekly, and if something doesn't go the way you'd like it then it is easier to make changes in advance.

Celebrate your progress

As you progress towards your goals, celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. Treat yourself to a non-food related reward like a new book, workout gear, or a spa day. Celebrating milestones motivates you to keep pushing forward. Share your achievements with your support group to motivate each other.

As you step into the New Year, embrace the opportunity to prioritize your health through mindful eating and achievable goals not just empty resolutions. Remember, the journey to a healthier you is about progress, not perfection. With determination, patience, and a positive mindset, you'll be well on your way to a nourished and revitalized version of yourself. Cheers to a year of wellness and growth!
